Sunrise Montessori School

Casa Program

Sunrise Montessori Casa Program provides the sense of security, nurturance and loving care that kindergartners and primary ages alike need to thrive during this stage of intense learning. As young children are committed to achieving independence, the Directress provides responsive individual attention as your child deals with positive experiences as well as frustrations. The program takes advantage of the rapid growth of fine and gross motor skills at this stage of development.

The Practical Life component of the Montessori Method is the link between the child's home environment and the classroom. Materials used will involve the children in precise movements that encourage their ability to concentrate, work at their own pace without interruption, and to complete and enjoyable and challenging activity. Within this are Four areas of focus: Control of Movement, Care of Person, Care of the Environment and Grace and Courtesy . Practical Life Activities such as pouring, sweeping, dusting, buttoning, zipping and table setting are introduced early, providing opportunities for children to care for themselves and thus their journey towards independence begins. Areas of learning include the development of large muscle movement and fine motor exercises for eye- hand coordination. Lessons on grace and courtesy are introduced and applied daily to help toddlers learn to share things and be considerate and respectful of their peers.

Classrooms are carefully planned to meet the needs of children and organized for their convenience. Areas of learning are defined, with a play area and also room for social interaction and activities required for growth and development. Teachers facilitate classes using age appropriate Montessori materials and activities are designed to arouse their interest and involvement while challenging their natural curiosity. The child's will begin her or his journey in the exploration of the environment using his sensory senses. Hence when the sensitive period of Language and Math is attained the child will begin her appreciation and interest in those areas, followed closely by areas relating to Culture and Botany.

The Montessori Method is based on the individual needs and capabilities of each child. In the classroom the children are offered a graduated series of materials and activities, and are encouraged to develop a sense of satisfaction from a job well done. The materials and activities are specifically designed to create a sense of purpose for your child. This increases their sense of achievement and develops within them a joy for learning. We know your child will have a positive experience at Sunrise Montessori, because we will be working very hard to make sure it is.

There are six areas of focus:
1. Practical Life Activities
2. Sensorial Awareness
3. Language Development
4. Mathematics
5. Culture & Botany
6. Art, Music and Movement

Practical Life : The children will experience real life situations and activities promoting gross motor activities, three finger grasp, eye hand coordination, promote concentration and instill inner discipline, self-discipline, care of self and of the environment, and mannerisms.

Sensorial : The children will discover color, size, shape, taste, smell, sound, sight, touch, discrimination and classification. In this area, there is much emphasis on "Training of the senses", which is an essential tool for later learning processes.

Language : Children begin laying the foundation for reading and writing with their senses, using the sandpaper letters and sound with sight objects to learn the phonetic sounds. The acquisition of the language is connected to the children’s strength of observation and sensorial training. The process of reading and writing takes place at in individual pace, with minimal interruption by the teacher.

Foreign Language : The children will learn about many languages with songs, games, and work in the cultural area. Currently in Canada, there is much emphasis on French and Mandarin classes.

Mathematics : Children are exposed to the concrete forms of number concepts in terms of symbols and quantities and work at an individual level in preparing for an abstract understanding of higher, more complex mathematics functions or operations.

Culture : The cultural area of the classroom includes science, cultural studies, geography, book research, investigation and experimentation. Discovery, classification, and awareness of the world around us are emphasized.

Animal and Plant Care : The children learn about nature, and the responsibility of caring for living plants and animals. The children care for the schools' aquarium, garden and potted plants. The garden is used for planting flowers and vegetation.

Arts & Crafts : Daily individual art activities for all levels are important for the development of intellectual, social and spiritual stimulus and growth. There are many opportunities for group activities on a regular basis through making models of objects from actual classroom lessons.

Music & Movement : Group time is a wonderful time for songs, music, movement and group coordination games. There are also many items in the environment to promote musical appreciation. Drama and Plays are introduced to the children with music and games, this is a fun and relaxing activity and develops large motor skills; and gives them a wonderful opportunity to bring out their naturally creative flair through song, dance and acting styles.
